The State of Oregon granted Pacific College, in Newberg, a college charter in 1891 when the college was established with eight fully accredited and seven provisional students. It was the outgrowth of a Quaker secondary school, Friends Pacific Academy, established ten years earlier when pioneer Friends from Iowa Yearly Meeting emigrated to the Newberg area. Sponsored by the Oregon Yearly Meeting of Friends Church, Friends Pacific Academy in Newberg opened in 1885 with nineteen students and a faculty of three. It increased to 130 students within the first five years. With eighth grade level requirements for entry, the institution expanded to include Pacific College in 1891.
